Black and White Printing Tutorials
One-on-One Printing Tutorials If you already know the basics of black-and-white darkoom technique and are ready to make a significant commitment to learning more, you may benefit from a private tutorial in the art of expressive print making. I provide one-one-one tutorials like the one described below. All sessions take place in my studio at 10 Vinton Court. Custom tutorials on more specialized aspects of black-and-white printing can also be arranged. Call 415 989-9157 for scheduling information, references, and pricing. For information about my background and practice of photography, see Nancy Warner and the rest of this web site. Hands-on
introduction to the art of expressive print making. Approximately
21 hours one-on-one teaching time in my studio and darkroom. You should
also have access to a basic darkoom of your own, and expect to spend
a total of at least 30 hours reviewing techniques on your own time.
All materials are provided for work in my darkoom, with the exception
of printing paper. Second and third sessions: Demonstrations (using my negatives) of about three hours each. A variety of techniques that lead to a fine print will be explored. Topics typically include negative evaluation; choosing the best paper; sizing and cropping; fine-tuning for contrast and density; eliminating variables; split development techniques; bleaching; archival processing. These two sessions should be consecutive weeks. Fourth through sixth sessions: Supervised printing sessions of about three hours each. I will observe and advise, and, if necessary, demonstrate difficult techniques. The goal is to produce one or two finished fine prints. These three sessions should be every other week, to provide extra time for extended exploration on your own. Seventh session: Takes places about 4-6 weeks after the sixth sesion, and consists of a follow-up critique of your subsequent work. |
