Portfolio Prints

The black-and-white images reproduced under portfolios and current projects on this web site were scanned from handmade gelatin silver prints. The color images in these sections were either scanned from film-based color prints or created from images captured with a digital camera.

All fine-art prints reproduced on this site are available for sale (see purchase), including gelatin silver prints, Polaroid image transfers, and inkjet prints, all described below.

Portrait prints

The print formats decribed here are also used for portrait prints. Most of our commercial portrait prints are either color digital prints (from a lab) or custom inkjet prints created in the studio.

gelatin silver print
Black and white fiber-based paper print. The silver is applied to the paper in a gelatin base. Produces very rich blacks and luminous middle grey-tones. The finished print is usually processed in a dilute selenium toning bath to increase the stability of the print. Some prints are toned with gold or sepia. This type of print will last indefinitely if properly stored or displayed.
Polaroid image transfer print
Print made using a transparency in an enlarger to expose a sheet of Polaroid film. The negative portion of the paper is separated from Polaroid's glossy receptor sheet and pressed onto pre-dampened watercolor paper. The dyes from the Polaroid then transfer into the watercolor paper, producing a unique print.
digital print
Print made from a digital file that was either captured with a digital camera or scanned from a print, negative, or transparency. Inkjet prints are the most common type of digital prints. A variety of papers and other surfaces are available, including traditional photographic papers in glossy or matte; 100% rag papers; and canvas or linen.
