How do you work?

A portrait session can last anywhere from ten minutes to an hour or more—whatever it takes to create the image or images you need. I display the results on a computer periodically to make sure we're on the right track or to facilitate adjustments of clothing, pose, or lighting.

At the end of the session, we view all the images and I help you make your final selections. If you need more time or want to consult with someone else, I can post a web gallery of the final candidates for up to two weeks.

Even subjects who regard themselves as unphotogenic or claim to "hate getting my picture taken" not only end up with excellent portraits, but often end up enjoying themselves.

What should I wear?

Attractive clothing that fits comfortably.

Here are some general guidelines:

Do you do hair and makeup?

No. I don't have anyone on staff to do this. I can recommend a salon around the corner that does excellent work at a reasonable price.

I have blotter powder here to reduce shine and a few basic products for touchup.

Most of the people on my web site either had no makeup when they arrived at the studio, or did their own beforehand.

What do you charge?

The minimum base fee for a studio session is $350 plus sales tax. The total price depends on a variety of factors, including the type of portrait and how it will be used, number of prints, number of image files you want and at what resolution, how many separate poses or subjects are involved, and so on. Call 415 989-9157 for a quote tailored to your situation.

Can I purchase all the rights to the images from my portrait session?

There's no need to purchase all the rights. We can come up with a use grant to suit your needs.

What about copyright? What say do I have over your use of my portrait?

I retain the copyright to all the images, and grant you rights required for your purposes.

I never license rights to a third party without first obtaining your written permission. As a matter of courtesy, I will also obtain your permission before using your image on my own web site or in any of my self-promotion or advertising.

Can I have a CD with all the images from the session on it?

This usually isn't necessary. Most individual portrait sessions result in half a dozen good portraits, at most. There are always going to be a few that aren't acceptable because of closed eyes, poor focus, and so on. I normally don't release any image that I haven't approved and then personally cropped, color corrected, retouched, and sized.

But I can be flexible about this. For example, a company's own graphic design department may want to use several images in combination and perform their own retouching and so on. Or a musician's PR department may want multiple unretouched, full-size images from a session for different types of materials. If you think you need something along these lines, let me know. It's usually possible to negotiate a fair arrangement that will satisfy everyone's needs.

What if I decide months or years later that I want another image from the session? Or if I lose the image you sent me?

I archive all images from all portrait sessions indefinitely (except for those that are out of focus or don't meet other basic quality requirements). As long as you can remember the approximate date of the session, I can find all the acceptable images from that session, even if you didn't order them at the time, and post a web gallery for you to review. The cost of ordering additional images at a later date varies depending on number of images, resolution, usage, and other factors.

If you want a replacement file for one you've already ordered, I can locate any delivered file in my archives and deliver it again via CD or email after payment of a $50 retrieval fee.
