Temple
Spaces
These images were made in October 2000 in three Buddhist temples in Japan. Several show guest rooms and other details of Eko-in on Mt. Koya, a temple of the Shingon sect. The others show details of the Zen temples Daisen-in and Shokoku-ji in Kyoto.
Traditional Japanese architecture both joins and separates interior and exterior spaces. Temples like these are deliberately designed to respond in subtle and surprising ways to changes in the light and weather throughout the seasons. Both the temples and their gardens reward unhurried observation.
