One Afternoon in Kurama

Most of these images were made on the afternoon of October 28, 2000, in and around the Kibune Shrine near Mt. Kurama, north of Kyoto, Japan.

As at many Shinto shrines, visitors to the Kibune Shrine can purchase wooden prayer tablets on which to inscribe a prayer or wish. They then hang the tablets on a roofed display board outside the shrine, as shown in the fifth image.

Many of the prayers in this image express wishes for a successful marriage. Others express the desire to become a great baseball player or for a family's good health. The sixth image, taken in the Yamazoe Tenkodo scroll shop, shows the labels on stacked boxes of scroll paintings. Calligraphic signs, seals, labels, and notes are a recurring subject in many of my photographs.
