OneZero Announces Sculpture by Saori Ide Photographs
by Richard Newman, Introduction San Francisco CA – April 19, 2003 – Gallery OneZero announces "Light & Shadow," second in the ongoing Studio Saturdays series of exhibits. When visitors first enter "Light & Shadow" at Gallery OneZero, Saori Ide's dramatic lantern sculptures seem to float into view, glowing against a deep red wall. At the opposite end of the room, Richard Newman's startling flower prints, mounted on brushed aluminum, gather the available light and reflect it intensified, as if they too were lit from within. Colin Warner's delicate inkjet prints of Japanese landscapes, architecture, and religious sculptures complement the spirit of the lantern sculptures. For this show, Nancy Warner has contributed work in progress from two ongoing series of gelatin silver prints:

Court runs west off Grant between Pine and California. Born in Osaka, Japan, Saori Ide moved to the United States permanently at the age of 18 and received her BFA from the University of New Mexico. She brings to her art a Western understanding firmly rooted in the East. Her work manfests these interwoven sensibilities, mixing the ancient traditions that underlie Hiroshige, Japanese Zen gardens, and Sumi ink paintings with the fractured abstraction of Braque. Previous exhibits have included installtions for the Annual Sculpture Walk at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Art Space in San Francisco, and Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
