The Show
What attracts visitors to San Francisco Chinatown? What do they see? What don't they see? What could they learn if they looked more closely?
This exhibit shows how two local artists interpret what they have found there. All the photographs in this show were made within ten blocks of Warner's studio, just off Grant Avenue near Chinatown's gates. Her black-and-white images include doorways, shop windows, worn surfaces, reflections, and people in the streets. Her color images celebrate calligraphy and handpainted signs, paper artifacts, toys and trinkets, and sidewalk vegetable stands. Print formats include gelatin silver prints, Polaroid image transfers, wall-size murals, and offset-printed hand-bound books.
Inspired in part by Warner's work, Delbridge has created her own interpretations of Chinatown, using familiar cliches such as fortune cookies and silk tassels to make art objects that ask questions rather than make statements. The artists also incorporate fans, slippers, backscratchers, ornate packaging, and other favorite tourist items in conceptual pieces and installations that turn common assumptions upside down.
